Business Portraits - Cell phone or Professional?

Everyone has a camera in their pocket, the smartphone. Although it is a lot of fun for spontaneously taking selfies and memorable moments for personal use, be careful where you might decide to use it to showcase your business or to make your business portraits. The quality difference between it and a professional camera is not marginal, it’s enormous!

Comparatively, the smartphone uses plastic lenses and a small sensor. A professional camera can have say 23 pieces of glass in one lens, specially composed with special coatings AND add to that, a robust, full frame sensor which will gather much more information. So with smartphones, you have an inferior image going into an inferior sensor.

SUPERIOR IMAGE QUALITY FROM THE PROFESSIONAL CAMERA…

Studies show that a high quality image is viewed much longer than low quality. Lower quality creates tension in the photo which can actually repel, so why use a lower quality image when your goal is retain the attention of the viewer and accurately depict the subject?

Cell phones are NOT considered to be high resolution, which is not the file size but the ppi (pixels per inch). Cell phones are typically only 96 ppi which is the setting for the internet but will NOT print large nor will it look good as a large photo on a desktop. It will likely be grainy, out of focus and inaccurate color. Professional cameras can be set as much as 600 ppi (billboards) but are typically set at 260-300 ppi which is a much higher resolution and can be printed and viewed large without losing any quality. The high res sensor picks up subtle changes in color and exposure that your eye picks up, not to mention a more flattering, accurate color.

CELL PHONE VS. DESKTOP…

Cell Phone providers will float the narrative that everything will go the way of the Cell Phone. That doesn’t appear to be true. For the last few years, studies are showing that it’s settling in around 50/50. For instance, Amazon says that 75% of initial searches are with the cell phone. What’s misleading is that 75% of those people will save their search and view again and buy from their desktop, so, actually, 75% buy from their desktop. One major reason is so the viewer can see the quality of the product from a larger image. Amazon will notify their sellers that the image is low quality and indicate that the higher the quality, the higher the search ranking.

EDITING…

Cell phones can only be edited with filters which is a layer imposed onto the base photo and can only be applied edge to edge. Professionally, there are literally thousands of adjustments that can be made to a raw photo for color accuracy, exposure, skin softening techniques, etc… which all can be local adjustments. That’s a big advantage that you can edit specific areas of the photo while not affecting the whole photo.
